Day 12: Les Baux, Pont du Gard & Avignon

We had a really, really big day today! Starting out, we drove to Les Baux, a small town situated on a hilltop with the ruins of a medieval city and chateaux as its feature. It was very windy at the top, but from it, there were sweeping views of Provence well worth the climb and the wind. After our visit, we sat down to probably about the nicest meal yet for lunch.

From there, we drove to the Pont du Gard - a piece of the ancient roman aqueduct that hauled water via gravity 30 miles to the town of Nimes. It would be incredible today, so the magnitude of what it was in its day is hard to comprehend. I spent time hiking up to the top on both sides of the river, as well as stomping around down on the ground. It was quite a sight, and we had a gorgeous day so the photos turned out lovely.

For an exhausting day, I think I can safely say everyone on the tour was disappointed with the 3rd hotel in Avignon - it's older, mustier and because Amy and I are the "young ones" we got put on the 3rd floor (which is 4 flights of stairs up). Neither of us were thrilled after a day of hiking around to haul our luggage up a zillion winding, small stairs...but we survived! Dinner made up for it - Moroccan food - I had lamb tagine, and Amy had the chicken. We were seated by our meat choice, and the lamb crew was quite lively and fun! Amy said the chicken folks were also pleasant. The food was great - I think it was time for a departure from French food for a night :)
