Day 10: Vaison la Romaine

Today was market day in Vaison la Romaine - this basically means the whole town turns into a big market from 7 a.m. until about 1 p.m., then it all disappears and the town goes back to sleep for a week. The wares for purchase were endless - from every food item imaginable (cheese, meats, veggies, breads, fruits, olives...) to household stuff (tweezers, potholders, etc.), clothes, soaps, etc. I got a cool striped scarf - they are apparently very fashionable as I saw them on practically every other woman I saw in Paris. However, they were kinda expensive there - so I was keen to pick one up for just 20 Euros (about $24) at the market!

And, let me tell you, Provence, in general, is WINDY as hell! (Though I'm not sure how windy Hell itself would be...but you get the drift!). Anyhow, it was a bit chilly and we were blown about quite a bit. After a chilly picnic lunch (Amy was a trooper and tried some cheeses, and in the end we settled on bread, fruit, cheese and olives...how Frenc
h!), the group re-convened and we saw the local Roman ruins. They were moderately interesting, but it's hard to get excited since I've been to Rome, Pompeii and other places with far more impressive sights. That said, we had a colorful local guide who gave a talk and it was interesting enough.

From there, we had a bit of quiet time before heading out to dinner with the crazy New York ladies and another couple who live in Minnesota (they're closer to our age than most on this trip). It was actually quite a good meal, though I overdid it a little (lap-band stuff) despite not exactly knowing how that happened...alas. In the end, it was a lovely day in this cute little town!

Photos: Lunch from the market; Market shots galore; the Ruins; our view from our room, the hotel and a few shots of the town.

p.s. Why can't we sell wine outta a truck like that?!?!
